Kerala, historically known as Keralam, is a picturesque state in South India located along the Malabar Coast. It was officially formed on November 1, 1956, following the States Reorganisation Act, by merging the Malayalam-speaking regions.

Spanning an area of 38,863 km² (15,005 sq mi), Kerala is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. As per the 2011 Census, it is the thirteenth-largest state in India by population, with 33,387,677 residents.

The state is divided into 14 districts, with Thiruvananthapuram as both the capital and the largest city. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and serves as the official language of Kerala.
